Hazel in Descent is a whimsical adventure-fairytale featuring original music, puppets, masks, and dance. With an hilarious nod to the storytelling style of 1920’s silent-film-era physical comedians, Hazel in Descent animatedly explores the relationship between one woman and her self-imposed critic. Hazel (our aforementioned heroine) loses her voice when she loses her lover and boldly takes off after him into a magical realm with only her stuffed monkey for company. There she encounters a vibrant cast of demons, weirdos, bozos, and a little ancient wisdom.

Derya Derman hails from Texas where she fancied herself an artist of the visual persuasion, but is also where she discovered that theatre is an excellent source of drama. She moved to nyc for schooling on the matter, where she earned her BFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She currently lives in Brooklyn and works in a fancy jewelry shop called Reinstein/Ross to make the proverbial ends meet. She writes plays and screenplays in her "free time" and makes objects for fun. One of Derya's favorite roles was that of the title character of "A Chicken Goes to Broadway," wherein Derya puppeteered a muppet-style chicken puppet through showy showtunes and dingy coops for last year's Samuel French Festival.

She's thrilled about Hazel in Descent, her show for this year's Spring Fever Festival, and she hopes you'll come out to see it. So far, it's been a life-changing event for her, and maybe it will be for you too.... From here, Derya will be working with Tomi Tsunoda's soundpainting company for future projects, as well as continuing to write, and filming her first short regarding catcalls and paintballs.
